My New Skincare Cleansing Routine
My Old OG Fav Salicylic Acid Spot Treatment
My Long Journey with Sensitive, Acne-Prone Skin
Ok, so I’ve had constant acne issues since I was about 12 years old, and now I’m 38. I’ve accepted that acne is just a bad horror-comedy show I’ll be starring in forever.
My mom has perfect skin, but my dad has dealt with acne his whole life, and he’s still dealing with it to this day — and he’s in his mid-60s. Like father, like son, I guess.
From trying many different skincare products over my 25+ year skin journey, it’s clear that I have sensitive, delicate skin that is very reactive to new products, especially those that aren't a perfect skin type match for me. I tend to break out at the drop of a dime. The kicker is that I also get breakouts when applying too much pressure on my skin when trying to extract blackheads and other little buggers from my pores. Plus, I’ve got very oily skin, so my pores constantly need a good extraction and cleaning to prevent clogged pores and excess oil.
These days, I don’t just break out—I get cystic acne, uhhhggg. It started about five years ago; the acne developed deeper in my skin and gets big and just sits there as I’m constantly hitting it with acid spot treatments and cleansers.
The older I get, the more fearful I am to try other products. It’s tiring wanting to have healthy-looking skin but battling breakouts and a budget when trying products that end up not being match for my skin type.
If you’re dealing with the same skin concerns, then you know how much of a juggle it is to not over-cleanse, not apply too much pressure, and find the best acne products—all to avoid breaking out and getting stuck in what I like to call the “zit cycle.”
Story Time: The Star Trek Brow Incident
I once had such a deep cystic acne breakout between my eyebrows that it kept getting bigger and bigger while just chilling deep in the skin. It started to morph the contours of one of my eyebrow. Funny enough, it kinda looked like I was a lost character from Star Trek, the ones with the big protruding brow bone alien-like eyebrows. Funny enough, it kinda looked like I was a character from Star Trek who only had his forehead prosthetics applied, lol.
Vacation Vibes: When Breakouts Don’t Take PTO — The Moment I Made the Big Change
I was on day one of an eleven-day vacation when I was hit with multiple cystic acne breakouts around my mouth, and it was relentless the entire trip. So was I, spot treating it with my OG fave salicylic acid spot treatment. Even though I was spot treating, the waves of cystic acne breakouts kept coming. I was broken out my entire trip and for weeks after. About three weeks after the trip and on my fifth wave of this intense cystic acne zit cycle horror show, I made a big switch—and I’m not looking back.
Discovering Paula’s Choice CLEAR Line
I once tried a Paula’s Choice product a few years ago — a BHA exfoliating toner, I believe — and I kinda liked it, but it just wasn’t a perfect match. I think it was because it was a super strong (2% BHA), which, funny enough, caused micro breakouts the day after I applied it at night. Oddly enough, even though I experienced some micro breakouts, I identified some great qualities in the product: it tightened pores, didn’t strip my skin’s natural moister barrier, and seemed to get into the pores to diminish blackheads.
So while looking like Freddy Krueger on my fifth wave of this cystic acne breakout around my mouth, I knew now was the best time to do a deep dive on Paula’s Choice and try making the big switch.
After a lot of time reading reviews and seeing before-and-after videos and photos, I decided to try the Paula’s Choice CLEAR line of products for sensitive, acne-prone skin.
Why Paula’s Choice Works for Me
I’ve known for a while that my skin reacts well to salicylic acid, and step one of the three-step skincare routine has a light amount of salicylic acid (0.5%) in the cleanser. But I saw that step three, the acne treatment gel, has benzoyl peroxide, which had me interested but also worried it wouldn’t be a perfect skin match and that I’d welcome my sixth wave of this nightmare cystic acne breakout.
Well, you’re going to love this: on day two, it was starting to become clear—love the pun—that my cystic acne breakout was neutralizing, and my skin was clearing up. I’ve been using the CLEAR 3-step skincare routine for six weeks now, and I’m so happy with the results and what it’s brought back to me. It didn’t just clear up my skin—it gave me back my confidence. I know this sounds like an infomercial, but this is for real for real, no joke.
Results and Spot Treatment Success
I’m still having issues with my skin, thats just my life, but the big change is that they’re not big issues—just little, very little issues. When I see or feel a zit coming on, I use the step three acne treatment gel as a spot treatment, as mentioned in the routine info online, and it’s working extremely well.
Recently, I saw a single cystic acne coming on and hit it every night for six nights with the spot treatment. The results were magic (see the photos below of the before and after timeline). The cystic acne diminished with every use, and it didn’t fry my skin texture or create a scab or scab-like texture. I was blown away.
My old salicylic acid spot treatment gel would burn through the skin and attack the problem, which was great, but it caused a brighter red tone and rough scab or scab-like skin texture when compared to the CLEAR step three acne treatment gel. Now I can apply light makeup on my little issues and not look like I’m covering up a dry, scabby acne area with that iconic “makeup over acne” look. The benzoyl peroxide treatment in this product lineup is just hitting differently than my old salicylic acid spot treatment.
The Takeaway: Acne Doesn’t Have to Win
Here’s what I’ve learned from years of battling cystic acne (and yes, surviving my vacation breakout nightmare): knowing your skin and picking the right products really changes the game. I know it a chess game of strategic moves and sometimes guessing and taking a chance, but you got this.
Ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, aren’t just buzzwords—they actually help prevent new breakouts, smooth texture, and even out skin tone by removing dead skin cells and unclogging pores.
But don’t forget: your skin isn’t just a one-size-fits-all scenario. Oily, combination skin, or aging skin all have different needs. Getting advice from a board-certified dermatologist or a trusted skin expert can save you from accidental skin irritation, dry skin, or that dreaded “bleached spot” look caused by some crazy intense benzoyl peroxide cleansers.
Healthline has a great article on Salicylic Acid vs. Benzoyl Peroxide, definitely worth the read.
At the end of the day, it’s about keeping your routine simple, smart, and gentle. Clear your pores, protect your skin’s natural barrier, tackle breakouts without stripping your skin, and keep things consistent. And remember, using a lightweight moisturizer or a facial moisturizing lotion that is oil free and fragrance free can help maintain a healthy protective skin barrier. Do that, and your skin—and your confidence—will thank you. Acne might show up uninvited, but with the right tools and topical treatments, you don’t have to let it steal the spotlight.
